4 Stars Worth the Money!
Love Love the Life Picture Puzzle books. I have purchased every single one and ALWAYS look forward to the next edition.

5 Stars Life Picture books
I buy these books for an older friend. It keeps her mind sharp and she really gets very excited when a new one comes out. I would recommend them all for casual entertainment.

5 Stars Wonderful fun!
I have all of the picture puzzle books from Life and I think they’re the best out there. I even gave a bunch of them to my family and friends this Christmas. I spend a lot of time relaxing with them and I’ve gotten really good at solving the puzzles.

I have to disagree with the first review here. The newest Vacations picture puzzle book from Life is just as much fun as all the others. The puzzles towards the end of the book are hard - but they’re supposed to be hard! I like starting with the easy ones, knowing that I can find all the changes and working my way through each section, until my brain starts to spin. I feel energized afterwards and I’m always disappointed when I’ve finally finished all the puzzles in a book. I just wish I could get a steady supply of new ones.

If I have any complaint with this book, it’s that the book doesn’t seem as well printed as the others. I can see through some pages and the colors don’t look as bright. Maybe that’s why the other reviewer complained. In some of the puzzles it’s hard to see the changes because of the printing.

Still, I’m giving it five stars because I can’t get enough of these puzzles. They’re the best!

3 Stars Not as much fun
I must say I did not enjoy this edition as much as I have the previous Picture Puzzle books. In many of the puzzles, the differences were so small or so subtle that they could not be seen with the naked eye. I like a challenging puzzle but I don’t feel you should have to work it with a magnifying glass. Even after consulting the answers I felt some of the differences would have been impossible to decipher.

The Penderwicks

May 30, 2009 by Vacations · Leave a Comment

The Penderwicks

Grade 4-6–In Jeanne Birdsall’s humorous novel (Knopf, 2005), four motherless sisters—Rosalind, 12, Skye, 11, Jane, 10, and Batty, 4—their absentminded professor dad, and the family dog share a summer retreat on the Massachusetts estate of Arundel. Owned by the frosty Mrs. Tifton and her lonely son, Jeffrey, Arundel’s pretentious mistress treats the oddly-matched Penderwick sisters and their doting father as social misfits. Feisty Skye and sensitive Jeffrey become best friends, drawing the reluctant Mrs. Tifton and the entire Penderwick clan into a series of hilarious misadventures, including runaway pets, an encounter with a bull, and a first crush. The sisters are determined to help Jeffrey escape being sent to the Pencey Military Academy, Where boys become men and men become soldiers. Susan Denaker’s gentle narration of this 2005 National Book Award winner perfectly captures the subtle humor and charm of each character. Fans of Sydney Taylor’s All-of-a-Kind Family or Maud Hart’s Betsy-Tacy novels will love this updated version of a comfortable childhood adventure. Just the ticket for an extended family car trip.–Celeste Steward, Alameda County Library, Fremont, CA

5 Stars A Big Hit
My little niece LOVES this book! I hesitated at first because it dealt with the death of a parent. But, surprise, surprise, she has read and is reading it again. I haven’t had the pleasure yet but I will. A perfect selection for an 8y/o bibliophile!

5 Stars A GREAT family story
Our whole family (with children ages 2 -12) LOVED this story! It is funny. It is sweet. It is true to the best and some of the oddities of human behavior and family life. I wish there were more “modern” wholesome family stories like this one!

5 Stars Wholesome and fun
My family loved this story. The characters are all strong and interesting. My 7 year old boy and 10 year old girl will want to listen to this many times. I can’t imagine NOT enjoying this book.

The Sisterhood of the Traveling Pants

The Sisterhood of the Traveling Pants

Studio: Warner Home Video Release Date: 07/29/2008 Run time: 119 minutes Rating: Pg

User Ratings and Reviews

1 Star Sisterhood of the Traveling pants
I never received this DVD from the company. I e-mailed on March 15th, 16th, and 18th and they responsed to the first e-mail on the 19th. They said it was being shipped and I still don’t have the movie. Amazon returned me my money and I have purchased the movie else where. I would not recommend this company to anyone.

3 Stars Sisterhood of Traveling Pants
My first Amazon order came in a nice bubble wrapped envelope but the movie case was broken at the corner. Disappointing.

1 Star Sisterhood of traveling pants
Regardless of high ratings by many people, this book is not appropriate for young readers due to too liberal sexuality remarks. My 12 year old daughter gave zero star after she read the book. I felt so bad as a parent for not having examined the book beforehand.

3 Stars Nice but….
CAUTION: This movie is best watched in the company of friends. If not, feelings of depression and friendlessness may occur.

3 Stars Upbeat and sweet
While this is definitely a story for the teenagers, I found myself quite fond of this charming little movie. I enjoyed the book and found this a nice adaption. The girls are charming and fit their roles perfectly. The soundtrack is fresh and fitting. This may bug men and the cynical, but the right crowd of girls will be pleased.

Scenic Driving Yellowstone and Grand Teton National Parks 2nd Scenic Driving Series

May 28, 2009 by Vacations · Leave a Comment

Scenic Driving Yellowstone and Grand Teton National Parks 2nd Scenic Driving Series

From the gateway towns to deep inside each park, this work profiles twenty six drives with maps, photographs, and suggestions on where to hike, fish, camp, find a room, and view wildlife in this premier natural area.

User Ratings and Reviews

2 Stars Yellowstone driving book
We didn’t find this book very helpful because it included most of the drives outside of Yellowstone. All of the roads inside Yellowstone lead to very specific areas and are clearly marked, a book isn’t necessary for driving ideas.

2 Stars Steer away
After reading the reviews for this book, I purchased it as I went on a quick tour through Yellowstone and the Grand Tetons. I was very disappointed. The trips are listed from point-to-point around the Grand Loop. However, if you are driving the loop in the opposite direction, the book is very difficult to follow. It doesn’t give driving distances for the points of interest. The book gives an estimated driving time from one (i.e. Mammoth to Old Faithful) to another, and mentions some points of interest along the way, but the reader is left to guess where along the drive it might be.

Be aware that the park access fees have changed since the book was printed. Other than that, I did not notice any major discrepancies.

Another minor gripe is that none of the pictures are in color, but are clearly color photos printed to black and white. For the price of the book, they should be in color; heck, even the Lonely Planet series uses color pictures. If not using artistic or color photos, I’d rather have more substance to the book itself.

I always travel with multiple guides and was glad that I did, especially for the Yellowstone portion of the trip, and would recommend the “Yellowstone Treasures Travelers Companion” instead. It had the same or more information than this book, listed mileage to each point of interest from either direction, and had color photos.

5 Stars Excellent Driving Guide to YNP and the Tetons
I used this guide extensively on a 3-day drive through both parks. It’s packed with information and is well written and organized. Highly recommended.

5 Stars Used this every day of our trip
We used this book every day we were in Yellowstone. It was such a help in planning each day, knowing where to stop, what to expect in terms of how long hikes were, finding restaurants and shops, etc. I would read the information about each place aloud to the kids, which helped pass the time between stops. One word of caution, though. We are not the type of family that does a lot of hiking, camping, climbing, etc. We did find that some of her descriptions of the difficulty of the hikes and trails were a bit underestimated. Between the heat and the altitude, this is important to keep in mind! Other than that, I think this is a must have!

5 Stars Excellent!
This book was right on the money with all the things to see while driving through the parks. In combination with this book Outdoor Family Guide to Yellowstone & Grand Teton National Parks (Outdoor Family Guides) and the Trails Illustrated maps of both parks:

Trails Illustrated Yellowstone Map Old Faithful

Trails Illustrated Mammoth Hotsprings Yellowstone National Park NW

Trails Illustrated Tower Canyon Yellowstone National Park NE

Trails Illustrated Yellowstone Lake Yellowstone National Park SE

National Geographic Trails Illustrated Grand Teton National Park, Wyoming, USA: Topo Map (Trails Illustrated - Topo Maps USA)

(which can also be purchased at http://www.ngmapstore.com), we had a very easy time getting around the park and where things were located. It made planning a whiz!

User Ratings and Reviews

4 Stars Well constructed product.
I eat an apple a day and needed something durable. This product appears to be extremely durable. It is constructed of quality material and I expect it to last several years. I do have a few suggestions that would improve a good product. This product slices the apple into 12 slices and with even the biggest apple the slices are very thin, and difficult to slice on an unpeeled apple. Six slices would be better. It probably is great for apple pies, but for snacks the slices are unnecessarily thin. Additionally, the center cylinder that actually cores the apple, is a bit too small. It is almost impossible to core an apple without getting into the seeds or core of the apple, unless the apple is small and perfectly symetrical.

5 Stars Hi quality. Works very well.
Some of the previous reviewers mentioned the weight which is why we bought it and it was a good decision. This product is sturdy. It’s worth the money, has a five year warranty (it will probably last five generations), and works well. My wife thought it a bit difficult to push through an apple but when I showed her it’s like driving drywall screws, once you start you don’t slow down, she sailed through the next one. It works very well and is very well built.

5 Stars Dalla Piazza apple slicer
This apple slicer is sturdy and does a good job with medium or small apples. It does not work as well with a large size apple. I like that it makes 12 slices rather than the more common 8.

4 Stars lots of slices, fast
We sell a wonderful American-made slicer at my family farm, Soons Orchards, but it does only 8 slices. This does 12, which makes a difference in chopping time for when we do applesauce, for example. (Our bakery is also using it.) I also plan to use it when we’re busy in the fall for apple sampling. It’s very heavy (which is good) and the raised handles are a nice touch. It is a sharp tool, of course, so keep it away from little hands.

5 Stars Highest Quality
Tried a couple popular brands but they were not easy to use or apple wedges too large…This item was easy to use and has the small apple segments…Blades are sharper than other models.

5 Stars Best cure for the winter or land-locked blues
This is one DVD that I might actually wear out. When you’re paining for that Caribbean escape to get you through, nothing is better than Captain Ron. A light-hearted sailing adventure that will make you forget the cold or how far you are from the sea. Like others, I wish they would put this out on wide-screen and maybe add some outtakes. I would buy it in a heart beat. If you have any sailing in you or any desire to spend time in the lower latitudes, you need to get this movie. It’s a fun time and will make you feel good.
